‘The Dumpster Project’ is an experiment conducted by Dr Jeff Wilson and his students that asks “Can one have a pretty good life as part of the ‘new one percent’, that is, living on 1% the energy and water of the average American home?”.

The project, which started in February 2014, will evolve through three phases—dumpster camping, average American dumpster home and über dumpster.

In the dumpster camping phase, it is basically an “old-school” style of camping, with little to no amenities and just the dumpster to sleep in. Phase two will see the dumpster equipped with electrical appliances and water supple. Lastly, the über dumpster will feature a pop-up second story and functionality of an average American home but within a small compound.

“We bring everything into the home these days. You don’t really need to leave the home for anything, even grocery shopping, anymore. What’s interesting about this is it’s really testing the limits of what you need in a home,” Wilson told The Atlantic.
