Some Turkish women are posting photos of themselves smiling and laughing online, in retaliation to their deputy prime minister’s recent remarks.

According to The Guardian, the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said that women “should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and she should preserve her decency at all times.”

Soon after, photos of various Turkish women smiling and laughing at the camera in public went viral online with the hashtag, #direnkahkaha, which translates to “resist and laugh” in Turkish.

One of the women who posted her smiling photo on Twitter even said, “If everybody laughs in public, the world would be a better place.”
